The copyright of the gallery art as well as the design elements of this site belongs to the artist, Johanna Öst.

By Swedish copyright law and international treaties, you may not display or distribute these works without the permission of the copyright holder, even when an original is sold to you.

Details and some exceptions granted are outlined below. If you have any questions, please ask.

The information below should be considered general guidelines. The artist reserves the right to allow or disallow usage on a case-by-case basis.

These restrictions may change at any time without notice. Please check back occasionally.

Private personal usage

For your private personal use, you may do whatever you please with Johanna's images: print them for your bedroom wall, use them for your computer desktop wallpaper, put them on a t-shirt etc.

If you want higher resolution pictures without the copyright notice, you can order prints.

Public/commercial usage

You have permission to display Johanna's pictures publicly, such as on a web site or in a magazine, free of charge if you

  • do not use them commercially, i.e. do not make any money directly or indirectly from the publication;
  • do not use them to advertise or represent anything, e.g.
    • on the cover of a demo tape, on the poster for an event,
    • as illustration for an article or story, or
    • as user icons (avatars) or RPG characters;
  • do not distribute them, e.g.
    • in web sets, layout templates,
    • stationery, clothing, stickers or bookmarks;
  • do not alter the images other than proportional resizing;
  • accredit Johanna visibly near the picture, with the address to this site, e.g. "By Johanna Öst <http://www.johannaost.com/>";
  • do not display more than 5 pictures.

You can avoid these limitations by purchasing partial or complete rights to the picture, or in some (non-commercial) cases simply by asking permission.

You may of course display the pictures in a commercial context (e.g. magazine, poster, web site) to accompany articles about the artist, to promote her art or to advertise it.

If you follow these rules, you don't have to ask Johanna for permission, though it would be appreciated if you mention it in the guestbook. For any other usage or if you are uncertain about these rules, please ask.

If the copyright belongs to someone else, as might be the case with some commissions, this will be indicated in the image description and you will have to ask permission of the copyright holder.

Purchasing usage rights

There are limitations to how Johanna's pictures may be used without compensation. To avoid these limitations (typically for commercial usage, advertising or to represent e.g. a band or an event) you can buy partial or complete rights to pictures.

Contact the artist if you are interested in purchasing usage rights or the full copyright for a work. You can also commission art specifically for the purpose.

May I use one of your pictures for a tattoo?

Please do! However, the tattoo artist may not keep the design and offer it to the broad public, since this would constitute commercial usage. For this, the tattoo artist must first contact Johanna and attain permission.

If you do tattoo Johanna's art, please send photographs. Let her know if they may be published on this site.

You can also commission a tattoo design.

If I buy or commission a work, may I use it commercially?

Buying a work, even a commission, does not transfer the copyright to you — unless you explicitly purchased the usage rights. This means you still need to follow the usage rules above.

If you want to display a commission online, you should use the watermarked image from this gallery. This helps protect the artist from copyright infringement.

May I use any of the site graphics?

No, you may not, except for the link buttons and banners. You may use the artwork in the gallery under these rules.
